About MCP

Monroe Community Players has taken pride in its productions and in the lasting friendships created by working together to create live theater in the Monroe Michigan area.

Harry and Edna Smith started the group in 1929 but productions stopped due to the war.  In 1948, their son, William D. Smith and his wife, H. Marie Betrus Smith, along with others, revived the group and we’ve been performing live theater ever since!”

Through the years Monroe Community Players has prided its self on the diversity of the plays we produce.  Monroe Community Players averages 4-5 Main Stage productions per season.  Usually, a season consists of a comedy, a drama, a children’s themed show and a musical, though the mix may vary season to season. We also produce smaller cabaret musical shows, interactive dinner theatres, and special fundraising events during a season.

Monroe Community Players stands out from other theatrical groups by its commitment to producing classic dramas and the works of Shakespeare on a regular basis.  Classic dramas such as The Crucible, Death of a Salesman, To Kill a Mockingbird and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof are produced on a regular basis.

Also notably, MCP is the only theater group in the area which performs Shakespeare on a regular basis.  Students studying Shakespeare’s King Lear, MacBeth or Romeo and Juliet, benefit from seeing a live performance when the words come to life on stage.

Monroe Community Players also produces exciting new works by local playwrights.  Original productions such as Upon the Heath, The Little Bear Stories by Aunt Bette, Reunion, The Wall and others written by local playwrights have had their first productions done by Monroe Community Players.  The Players have also sponsored Play Writing Workshops for adults and the Monroe Street Project which introduced children to the world of theatre.

We continue partnering with the River Raisin National Battlefield Park, performing scenarios at the Rally on the River Raisin.

Monroe Community Players are also very active statewide, as a member of the Community Theatre Association of Michigan. Interested MCP members take advantage of the educational opportunities provided by CTAM by taking courses at workshops/conventions and bringing that knowledge back to the group.  Monroe Community Players are also a regular entry in the American Association of Community Theater’s AACTFest Competition.   Held every 2 years, community theater groups across the state of Michigan present their finest works in a weekend of theatrical excellence.

The Monroe Community Players are a 501(c)3 non-profit, all-volunteer organization.
